Last fall Olivia played AYSO for the first time. She loved it...well, let me paraphrase, she LOVED the social aspect which I guess is the idea behind getting a 5 year old into sports, right? Towards the end of the season the actual "sport" part of soccer started to catch on so that ended up being money well spent.
Now it is softball season.
Why does that sentence deserve its' own paragraph you ask? Well, we live in baseball and softball crazy town. People are NUTS for little league around here and apparently softball is no different. Now, I played softball growing up...well, let me re-phrase that....I wore the uniform, tried to do what my coaches asked me, and picked at the grass a lot. BUT...at least the social aspect got me involved. Anyway, in those days all softball involved was a glove, some play clothes, and practice, and maybe a game now and then.
AND NOW?????
Here is the list of stuff you need to play softball as a 5 year old.
1. face mask ( for fielding)
2. glove
3. cleats
4. batting helmet ( yup, they have to have their own batting helmets due to the "lice" factor...eww)
5. a bat ( optional: which means we have NOT bought her one)
6. sliding pants ( also optional: are you kidding me? She's five. )
7. a bag to carry all of this in ( luckily we had an old gym bag that was big enough)
I wish Chad had taken a picture of my face when he gave me the list of stuff to buy. I seriously couldn't speak for like 2 minutes. haha.
She has 1-2 practices a week AND 2 games a week. Remember...she's 5. It's a little mind boggling.
BUT, she loves it. This is the one sport that she has been begging us to let her play since she saw her first Dodgers game on TV at the age of 2. And , you know what , she's pretty good. Definitely not a grass picker like her mother was.
And I have to admit...she looks pretty darn cute in her uniform...:-)
